St. James High School's Music program was started in 2005 by Music
Educator Dr. Ann Marie Lane. This marked the long awaited return of a
Music program to the high school's curriculum after a twenty year
absence. The school offers Music courses at the junior high and senior
level including General Music 7 - 9, Music 2200, Music 2206, Music 3206,
and Ensemble Performance 2105/3105. As well there is a school Choir and a
school Band. Today approximately 64% of the school population
participates in a Music course.

St. James High School Band was formed in 2006 by Dr. Lane. The Band has a
very active year-long performance schedule. The Band regularly performs
at community and school events. These include Remembrance Day Ceremony,
Awards Night, Christmas Concert, Memorial Tree Lighting Service, Hockey
Tournaments, St. James High School Idol Competition, Menu and Merriment,
Sweets and Songs, Atlantic Band Festival, MusicFest Canada, Graduation
Ceremony, Spring Concert, and the Cancer Relay for Life. The Band also
performs out-reach concerts for elementary school children and senior
citizens.

The Band has received several performance awards at regional and national
competition. The Band received Bronze and Gold Performance Awards at the
Atlantic Band Festival in Halifax, Nova Scotia and a Gold Award for
Performance Excellence at MusicFest Canada - The Nationals in Toronto,
Ontario. The Band as well received two consecutive invitations to compete
at MusicFest Canada - The Nationals (2009 and 2010). Most recently Dr.
Ann Marie Lane and St. James High School Music Program were recipients of
a 2010 National Music Education Excellence Award from the Kodaly Society
of Canada. This Award recognizes the quality Music Education Program
offered by Dr. Ann Marie Lane Lane at St. James High School. Only
forty-nine Music Education Excellence Awards were presented in 2010 in
Canada.
